Gandhi Smriti,
New Delhi
Formerly known as the
Birla House or Birla Bhavan, Gandhi Smriti is the place where Mahatma Gandhi
spent the last 144 days of his life, before he was assassinated on January 30,
1948. Originally belonging to the business family of the Birlas, this property
is now a museum dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi. Some of the most popular
exhibits in this museum include the room in which he lived and the prayer
ground where he was martyred. The Gandhi Smriti museum is a popular attraction
among travellers visiting the Indian capital from different parts of the
country and the world.
Sabarmati
Ashram, Ahmedabad
Located at the banks
of the Sabarmati River, this place once acted as the residence of Mahatma
Gandhi and his wife, Kasturba Gandhi. Among the many things in history, this
place acted as the origin of both the Dandi March and the Salt Satyagraha. The
Sabarmati Ashram provides a quick recap of India’s pre-Independence history and the
life of the Mahatma.

The Mani Bhavan Gandhi
Museum in Mumbai has been one of the biggest witnesses of Mahatma Gandhi’s
political greatness. What acted as Mahatma Gandhi’s political headquarters for
17 years, from 1917 to 1934, it was the Mani Bhavan from where the Mahatma initiated
the Non-Cooperation, Satyagraha, Swadeshi, Khadi and the Khilafat movements
among other great political deeds. The major attraction in Mani Bhavan is the
library on the ground floor which houses more than 50,000 books by and on
Mahatma Gandhi.
Aga Khan
Palace, Pune
The Aga Khan Palace played a significant role in shaping up the events of the Indian Freedom Movement. This was the place which served as a prison for Mahatma Gandhi, his wife Kasturba Gandhi, and Secretary Mahadevbhai Desai after the launch of the Quit India movement.
In fact, this was also the place where Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadevbhai Desai passed away while in captivity. Located near River Mula in Pune, the Aga Khan Palace is now a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi and his life. It also served as the location for the shooting of Sir Richard Attenborough’s iconic film, Gandhi.

The National Gandhi Museum is one of the most prestigious museums dedicated to the life and works of Mahatma Gandhi. Opened shortly after the assassination of Gandhi, this museum is famous for its impressive collection of the Mahatma’s personal memorabilia and art pieces. Among the popular collectibles in this museum are Mahatma Gandhi’s personal things including his slippers, utensils, spectacles, beddings, jail bowl and the stick which he used, to undertake the famous Salt March from Dandi.
